English Language Learner (ELL) Supplemental Practice Exam

Strengthening the first language provides a bridge to the second language by letting skills and knowledge carry over across languages. Phonological awareness in the first language can aid pronunciation and listening skills in the second language, even as there are differences to adapt to.

A common misconception is that focusing on the first language would hinder second-language progress or is unnecessary. In reality, continuing to develop L1 supports L2 by expanding a learner’s overall linguistic toolkit and confidence, making transfer of skills and concepts across languages more natural.
